Three Authors Visit Calvary for Literature Day – Monday 27 August 2012

I have always believed that having authors, illustrators and storytellers visit the school and speak to  students is a great way to inspire children’s reading and writing.  Hearing an author talk about how they got their ideas, how they construct their stories and hearing them read extracts from their books can really have a lasting impact on students. It can add new dimensions to the books on our library shelves and can be used as a powerful tool to help turn our student into readers. Morris Gleitzman, a popular author of children’s books said, “It takes only one book to make a reader” – an author visit can be a way for a student to find that book!

It is because we are so passionate about books and want our student to have that same enthusiasm that the library staff organise a Literature Day annually for our students in Years Three to Eight, when we invite renowned children’s authors, illustrators and storytellers to our school for the day. This year we hosted authors John Heffernan, Christine Bongers and Anita Bell – all award-winners in their field. Anita Bell announced our Year Six winning authors and at recess the winners were invited to meet all of the authors and choose a book written by the author of their choice and have it signed as a prize for their winning efforts. All students were given the opportunity of purchasing and having a book signed by our visiting authors.
