Co-curricular Activities » Debating and Public Speaking

Re-introduced to the College in 2007 with only five students involved, the Debating and Public Speaking Program has grown in leaps and bounds. Now involving both campuses, students at Calvary Christian College have ample opportunities to excel  as communicators.

This year Calvary has entered five teams in the Senior Queensland Debating Union (QDU) Competition, thereby allowing students in Years Eight, Nine, Ten and Twelve to compete against students from schools across Brisbane.  Additionally a Year Eleven team competed in the Beenleigh Rotary Competition. Four teams from Years Six and Seven compete in the Junior QDU competition.

For the last four years, Calvary teams have reached the final round of the Beenleigh Rotary Competition and have won this competition in 2010 and 2012. In the QDU competitions, teams regularly win through to participate in the final rounds. We are very proud of our students’ achievements in Debating.

The college has entered students in a variety of Public Speaking competitions including from Rostrum Voice of Youth, Lions Youth of the Year and the AB Paterson Public Speaking Competition. Entries continue to increase in these competitions, with 2011 seeing students from Years 4 to 12 competing. In 2011, Calvary students were once again successful in reaching the finals in the Rostrum Voice of Youth Competition and the AB Paterson Public Speaking Competition. In addition two of our students won their age divisions in the AB Paterson Competition.

In 2012, we look forward to the continued participation of our students in all these competitions.  We pray that they will use their gifts and talents in these areas to build their self-confidence and bring glory to God.
