Charlotte sets a shining example

Little Charlotte Badcock (Prep T) has set a shining example for her Prep friends in their ‘Sharing the Planet’ unit by taking action and choosing to plant a tree.

Calvary Christian College Prep students, as part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program taught, have been exploring wise stewardship of the world they live in.

The IB program aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

In the ‘Sharing the Planet’ unit, children discuss and reflect on how their actions have positive and negative consequences for their environment.

There are five essential elements of the IB program, one of which is action – student initiated action.

Charlotte initiated what she called the ‘Pollution Action’ which involved planting a tree and picking up litter with her fellow Preps.

As part of her action, Charlotte planted her tree with Calvary Christian College Council Chairman, Mr Alex Young.

Charlotte’s Prep teacher Mrs Tracey Schmidt says, “The children really took on the concepts of responsibility and connection.

It’s not just about learning information, but about ending up at an action point, doing something about what they learn.

Charlotte really embraced this concept and suggested planting a tree, modelling for her classmates the right way to go about learning.

Putting what they learn into action. ”

Some of the other units they cover include ‘Who We Are’, ‘How the World Works’ and ‘How We Express Ourselves’.

The IB Program encourages students to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
